Neurofeedback and Brain Mapping: Your Drug-Free Solution to Anxiety, Depression, and Insomnia

If you struggle with anxiety, depression, or insomnia, you know how frustrating it can be to rein in your brain as it tumbles into unhealthy territory, heedless of the pain and discomfort it causes. It’s in these moments that you wish you could exercise more control over your rogue brain, which is where neurofeedback and brain mapping come in.

At JNT Natural Medicine, under the expert and compassionate direction of Dr. Alan James, our team provides a wide range of services that take a holistic and integrative approach to mental and physical health. We believe that medications can play a role, but they don’t necessarily treat the underlying cause of your problem, which is why we offer a way for you to retrain your brain for long-term mental health.

Here’s a look at how neurofeedback and brain mapping can help resolve your anxiety, depression, and insomnia, without resorting to drugs.

Getting the lay of the land

Despite the great advances in modern medicine, the brain remains much of a mystery. However, we are gaining some ground in figuring out what makes it tick, and it starts with brain mapping. With brain mapping, we record your brainwaves, which helps us better understand how it functions and responds and, most important, whether you have any abnormal brainwave patterns.

To study your brainwaves, we turn to electroencephalography, or EEG, which records the electrical activity in your brain. The EEG is completely harmless as we attach sensors to your head and then record your brain’s activity for 12 minutes — six minutes with your eyes open and six minutes with them closed.

With this information, we create a map of your brain to identify where and when your brainwaves act abnormally or erratically.

Retraining your brain

With your brain mapped, we then turn to neurofeedback. We again attach sensors to your head and outfit you with photic light glasses. Once you’re set up, we use a computer-based program to provide feedback that will guide your brain’s activity.

More specifically, when the monitor records abnormal brain activity, we use visual stimuli with the special glasses to gently coax the signals in your brain toward more normal pathways and patterns. By doing this, we retrain your brain and encourage healthier function, which can help offset depression, anxiety, insomnia, and more.

Tackling your mental health

Most of our clients benefit from 1-3 neurofeedback sessions a week, which last less than an hour. And this treatment is completely noninvasive, which means you’re free to get on with your day directly afterward. There’s no standard treatment timeline, but you should count on several weeks of neurofeedback sessions.

We also offer the Clear Mind Focus™ unit, which is a portable system that allows you to continue your brain training in the comfort of your own home.
